Meditation: Where To Start?

There are many ways to meditate. It's easy for new learners to get overwhelmed by the variety of teachers and traditions. It's all so vague! How are you supposed to know who to trust, and which techniques work, and - for that matter - what to look for as-as sign of progress?

That pretty much summarizes my first few years of practice. Instead of meditating, I spent all my time agonizing over whether meditation was right for me in the first place.

A Different Way In - Identifying the Elements

I would like to help you avoid the above scenario.

The way I finally worked it out was by teasing apart the basic elements of meditation. What are the actual core skills that underlie the different techniques or styles of meditation, and how do they work together to lead to a successful practice?

Once I got clear on this, I could become my own teacher. On the cushion, but also in the world, where the skills matter even more.

I still learn continuously from other teachers and practitioners. No matter how experienced you get, it's important to get feedback, to refresh your perspective. But in general, a lot of the confusion goes away when you have a solid framework for making sense of what you're doing.

A Framework That Lasts

And that's the intention for this course. To give you a framework. To boil down the art and inner science of meditation to its basic elements and working parts, in a way that I hope is clear, fun and accessible.

The course will help you create a customized practice to suit your particular needs and temperament. It will put you on the road to becoming your own teacher.

Four Styles

We get a clear understanding of the elements of meditation by exploring four contrasting styles or techniques:

  • Concentration Meditation, and how it leads to simplicity and peace
  • Mindfulness Meditation, and how it leads to insight and perspective
  • Loving-Kindness Meditation, and how it leads to friendliness and compassion
  • "Just Sitting" or Do Nothing meditation, and how it leads to acceptance and deep connection

The course is 2 hours long, a mix of teaching, discussion, and guided practice, and audio download of guided meditations is also available.

Requirements

No requirements of prerequisits necessary, this class is great for beginners!
